Outside the Law is like a combination of previous Cynthia Rothrock films. Luckily, it's a combination of some of her better movies. It's as if someone took Guardian Angel, Lady Dragon, Rage and Honor 2, China Obrien, etc., mixed them all up in a blender and out came a delicious cocktail called Outside the Law. Cynthia Rothrock plays Julie Cosgrove, an ex-special agent who went awol after her husband(and partner) was killed during a botched mission.(see Guardian Angel,Lady Dragon) While on the run she stops in a small Florida town and manages to get involved with a young couple who are having problems with the local kingin. The kingpin, Michael Peyton(played by Jeff Wincott) controls the town mainly because the local police chief(Dan Lauria) can't control him (ala China O'brien). There's a subplot about the feds tracking down Julie, but it's pretty much forgotten and quickly pushed to the background. After a little investigative work, Julie finds out that Peyton is on the verge of a major drug deal and even though she's on the run, she still can't stand by and let this happen. What follows is a solid action movie that hits all the right notes, even if the tune is very familiar. Cynthia Rothrock turned in another excellent performance. Instead of a one note, dark and gloomy personalty, you see Julie Cosgrove as a reluctant hero who uses her commando-like training to make the best out of a bad situation, while still keeping a sense of humor. Dan Lauria has a small role as the local police chief but he makes the most of it. Seamus Deaver and Jessica Stier play Rick and Rita, the young couple who somehow find themselves in middle of the action. They're mostly there to move the story along and look pretty. The action is top notch, with a lot of fight scenes and satisfying explosions. Most of the movie has CR beating down various nameless thugs. But for some reason, Jeff Wincott isn't fighting in this movie. I was hoping for a cool Rothrock/Wincott fight scene and kept expecting him to whip out a roundhouse kick or something, but it never happened. Instead, a ringer is brought in for the big fight scene at the end(just like in Honor and Glory and the Duke of Hazzard Reunion.) The temp is James Lew, who just happens to be the fight coordinator for the film. I'm not really complaining, because it was a good fight sequence, it just seemed strange since Wincott, aka martial arts movie star, is standing right there. All in all, Outside the Law continues Cynthia Rothrock's streak of good films. Little pieces of a lot of good movies came together to make a winner. The ending leaves room for a sequel and I hope it happens. Best Fight Scene CR vs a couple of thugs. Julie gets caught spying on a drug shipment and has to fight her way out, with the help of a steel chain. Best Quote After a Julie interrupts a thug harrassing a waitress. Thug- "Who are you?" Jule- "Miss Manners." She then proceeds to beat the snot out of him.
