This is a strange film. This is how it breaks down. Cynthia Rothrock plays Banshoi, a monk. Okay. She is protecting a child from bad guys. Okay. The child is actually a reincarnation of Buddha. Ummm, Okay. The bad guy is a rival monk who looks just like Dave Chappelle. And in the middle is a evil aunt and an illegal chinese immigrant. At least this is what I think the movie is about. It wasn't exactly easy to make sense of.

I'm not going to get bogged down in the plot of this film(Because it still escapes me). And the other characters are pretty much a blur. I'll concentrate on the main thing this movie has going for it. Fight Scenes. It's amazing that even in CR's bad HK movies, the fight scenes are still much more exciting than much of her American films. CR's first fight in the Temple showcases her athletic skills. She jumps, flips, and spins through the bad guys. Her fight in an apartment is only a warmup for an incredible scene in a playground. The big finale is just as great, with Cynthia beating down bad guys left and right.

But with the good, comes the bad. Simply said, other than the fight scenes, this movie..well... stinks. The plot is laughable and the acting in it is barely passable. The other characters are really offensive. The Aunt hates kids and hits them in class(She's a teacher). The immigrant is a complete idiot who eats his own (fill in the blank) along with dog food. And these are the good guys! Just add really bad special effects, a glowing monk on TV, plus CR fighting with a child-shaped backpack on, and you should have a good idea of the movie. Also be prepared for a slight shock when CR's dubbed voice comes on.

If you do decide to see Prince of the Sun, do yourself a favor and fast forward to the fight scenes. If not, just remember that I warned you. By the way, this was the last film Cynthia Rothrock made in Hong Kong.

Best Fight Scene
Cynthia Rothrock vs The Bad Guys. Watching CR with a kid shaped backpack battle bad guys is a treat in an otherwise worthless film.
