Ah, a nice simple action movie is always fun to watch. No Retreat, No Surrender 2 requires almost no brainpower to enjoy. A guy's girlfriend gets kidnapped and he and a couple of friends go to get her back. The guy in this one is Scott, played by Loren Avedon. His friends consist of Mac and Terry, Max Thayer and Cynthia Rothrock. It's a good thing NR,NS 2 is a brainless action movie because if the viewer were analyze the main character, Scott, it would be very obvious that he's not very likable. Aside from the bad acting, Scott pretty much gets on your nerves. Loren Avedon does have some good fighting moves though. Matthias Hues plays Yuri, the villian. After hearing him recite a few lines it's best to just ignore what he says and wait for him to start hitting people.
I'm beginning to think that Cynthia Rothrock has gotten a bum rap about being a bad actress. Because in this film and the last few I've seen, she is the only one who does a decent job. In her scene with Yuri, it's funny to watch him stumble through a line, while CR waits for him to finish the sentence so she can deliver hers. You can see the look in her face saying 'C'mon, I haven't got all day'.
No Retreat, No Surrender 2 really takes off in it's second half. Scott, Mac and Terry proceed to kick butt left and right. The fight scenes have a decidedly Hong Kong feel to them, probably because for all intents, NR,NS is a Hong Kong film(it was directed by Corey Yuen). There's a very good fight scene where the trio is fighting a group of monks using ropes. Lots of flipping and spinning going on there. The movie takes a slight Rambo-ish turn near the end with the assault on the enemy camp but it doesn't last too long and quickly goes back to high kicking action.
If you see NR,NS 2 at the video store, don't be afraid to pick it up, just don't pay too much attention to the plot. And brace yourself for the ending..it's heart wrenching.
Best Fight Scene Cynthia Rothrock vs Unknown: CR has to fight a henchman to get to the Russian bad guy. A lot of hard hits and fast moves make it even better that her showdown with Yuri.
Best Quote Terry: Alright, if that's the way you want it, I'll go through him, to get to you!
